When chatting on these international BBSs, you bumped into a lot of people from all over the world. Whilst English was the preferred international language of the BBSs, this would of course vary from country to country.

For example, anyone from a Commonwealth country would type their words in UK-English. They would spell their words differently, such as “colour” instead of “color”, or “organisation” instead of “organization”.

In addition, you would identify the nationality of the person by the words they used in their chat. For example, Australians would use the word “mate” which means friend. Americans would use local lingo such as “home run” or “QB”.

Every user would also have their own chat vocabulary, depth, and style.

Germans, for example, would type in a very clinical manner, straight to the point. Not much fanfare or excitement. Sometimes, they would throw in a German word in their chats which identified who they were and where they were from.
